Location Lιguillac de l`Auche is a large village (pop. 800) situated away from the main roads, in the White Pιrigord which gets its name from the abundant limestone in the area. Situated 15 km west of Pιrigueux, capital city of the Pιrigord with its rich past. Further north, at approx 30 km, you will find Brantτme also called the Green Venice of Pιrigord with its magnificent Bιnιdictine abbey. Further east, you will discover the Chβteau de Hautefort. Finally, not to be missed, the Vιzere and Dordogne valleys where you will be able to canoe, Montignac, its museum, Les Eyzies de Tayac, and Sarlat and many more castles, caves, Bastides, picturesque villages with their multicolour markets.
PLACES TO VISIT: Pιrigueux. 15 km. Capital city of the Dordogne department, set on the banks of the River Isle. The city boasts a beautiful medieval centre as well as a smaller but nonetheless fascinating roman quarter. Ribιrac. 25 km. Pleasant quiet town with many historic building, famous for its Friday market reputedly the biggest market in Perigord. Brantome. 30 km. Idyllic village on the banks of the River Dronne, known locally as the Venice of Perigord. Boasting a beautiful Benedictine abbey and a fabulous troglodyte cave with scenes of the Last Judgement carved in the stone make it well worth a detour. Aubeterre sur Dronne. 40 km. Classified as one of the prettiest villages in France, this village, full of rustic charm with steep cobbled streets overlooks the Dronne, is built in the shape of an amphitheatre on a white cliff. Its monolithic church is one of the most beautiful and unusual churches in the world. Dating from the 12th century, it is carved into a chalk cliff and is the largest underground church in France.
THINGS TO DO: Golf Public de Pιrigueux, Marsac sur lIsle. 12 km. Golf course. 18 holes 6028m par 72. On the banks of River Isle, a fairly flat, technical course with many water hazards. La Brande, Fouleix. 35 km. Great for kids, with an amazing collection of houses built of willow and various other materials hidden throughout a woodland walk. L`Appel de la Forκt, Thιnon. 50 km. Tree top adventure park. 9 progressive trails with over 100 activities. Swing, crawl and climb through the trees or slide down one of the 25 zip lines. An unforgettable moment to share with family or friends. Grottes de Lascaux. 80 km. World famous caves boasting paintings estimated to be from around 19,000 years ago. Open to the public after WWII but closed in 1963 because the paintings were being damaged by the carbon dioxide produced by thousands of visitors. The current site is a replica situated 200m from the original site.
FURTHER AFIELD: Thiviers. 50 km. `Capital of the foie gras in Green Perigord`, the old part of the town holds the most interest for visitors including devilish carvings on the church columns! The town also has an important history of producing pottery. St Jean de Cole. 50 km. Very attractive village with a stone bridge over the river, and a well preserved old centre with castle, covered market and church. Bergerac. 50 km. One of the largest and most important towns in the region on the banks of the river Dordogne and with delightful old centre boasting many attractive, medieval, half-timbered buildings. Les Eyzies. 70 km. Home to the worlds most beautiful caves, some with outstanding crystallisations as well as stunning cliffs and rock formations. Cromagnon man was discovered here at the end of the 19th century. Nearby Fond de Gaume is one of the last prehistoric cave-painting sites that is still open to the public. The National Prehistory Museum which houses one of the worlds most complete collections of prehistoric artifacts is also found in Les Eyzies.
